In the recent years a new technological advancement has been added to cars. It is called a traction control. While the name suggests it has something to do with traction it is not real clear why it has been added to cars unless you fully understand what it is. Traction control allows your car to remain steady when braking, turning, or accelerating. In other words traction control gives your tires more grip on the road surface.

Why Traction Control Is Important?

Have you ever come up to a stoplight with ice on the roads and skidded just a little? Or have you ever gone around a corner and found the road wet from rain and skidded? These are two very plausible reasons why traction control has been added to cars. Traction control allows the tires to grip the road, which means if you encounter icy roads, wet roads, or a slick spot your tires will have more traction than they would have without the control. Your car will automatically correct for the road surface by enabling traction control. When you accelerate quickly your tires tend to spin out rather than grip. Traction control will keep this from ruining your tires. When you spin your tires you are essentially rubbing away the rubber, making the tires weaker over time. So, if you have traction control that will allow your tires to grip the road better than you are essentially saving yourself from accidents and ruining tires. This is the main reason why traction control is important

Other Components of Traction Control

The most well known part of traction control is the anti lock brake system referred to as ABS. Anti lock brakes prevent the locking up of your brakes when you panic brake or brake hard. In older cars you used to be able to hear the tires lock as the car began its skid to give you time to brace. Now with anti lock brake systems we no longer have to worry about our brakes locking. They will simply help you stop before you become involved in an accident.

Stability control has also been added in a few of the newer model cars. Stability control helps with sliding. Stability control means that the card will not slid sideways. Stability control allows for braking or the throttle application to correct a slide.

Traction control has three components in some cars from traction, anti lock brakes, and stability control. The anti brake locks control the braking forces of the wheel while traction helps with the acceleration forces. In other words to help us drive with more safety car companies have been figuring out ways to improve safety features such as traction control. We all need a little help stopping now and then to keep us from accidents. With traction control we are saved from our brakes locking during a hard stop, as well as from skidding. While traction control does help you do need to know it will not always prevent accidents, especially on dangerous road conditions. Therefore driving safely is important at all times.

When you are looking to buy a new car you always have the choice in buying the extended warranty so that you will have coverage for whatever mechanical problems may arise. There are of course some things the warranties do not include such as replacement of hoses, and other minor car parts and issues. Mostly the vehicle warranty exists to make expensive mechanical problems such as engine problems, flat tires, fluid changes, and other things covered so you don’t have to come up with the money.

Most of us question whether the vehicle warranty is actually worth the expense. It is usually around thirty more dollars a month if you have a car loan or lease. This means that you are paying for a warranty you may never need. Another thing about vehicle warranty is that it doesn’t cover the mileage services that you need to have. Vehicle warranty is designed more often for the major problems if they arise, but taking your car in for oil changes, 10,000 mile check ups, etc., your will have to come up with money for the services.

There are definite advantages to having the vehicle warranty especially if it is on a new car. Cars “become” extremely expensive when you have a major mechanical problem. The newer model cars are built with more technology and therefore tend to be more expensive to fix with the new equipment needed to fix the problem. This means that a person who has been in an accident or has a major mechanical problem may not have the finances for repairs without having the vehicle warranty.

Let’s look at an example: The New Beetle. This car not only has a small engine with German technology, but most of the parts are extremely expensive. When you own one of these cars and need to have a moderate work done on it, most likely it will be not less than $600 dollars depending on what is wrong. Some simple hose repairs can be close to $300 for the labor as well as the parts because of the complicated engine design so the service people are spending significantly more time working on it.

Not all cars are like the above example certainly. Some of the older cars are still fairly inexpensive to fix depending on the mechanical condition. They have simpler engines without all the advanced technology implemented.

So are vehicle warranties important? I would conclusively agree that vehicle warranties in this day and age are needed, especially for the newer vehicle. Without having someone to help pay for the work needed on the vehicles of today you may have to spend more on mechanical issues than you can afford. While the vehicle warranty may seem expensive its potential makes the fee worthwhile every month. We may not realize it when we are sitting in the office going over the monthly payments and the total vehicle cost, but if you pause for just a moment and realize the expense of what could have versus the cost of the warranty if it happens then you will find vehicle warranties do serve a purpose.

We are all very careful when buying something used because we never know if it will work properly once we get it home. This is no different when you are looking for a used car. Most used cars have become a source of problems for the original owners and they feel they need to get a new car. Occasionally they are just upgrading to the new model, whatever the reason, there are things you can do to protect yourself while buying a used car whether it is from a dealer or individual.

First of all you will want to take the car for a test drive to ensure there are no problems with the mechanics while driving. Things to look out for include steering, tires, unnatural noises, and brakes. You will also need to look at the cosmetic side of things. Is the car in shape? Are the seats in good shape or worn out? Are there a lot of dents on the car? Check the car’s history. Carfax and other online resources can tell you if the car has been in a major accident and been refurbished. Other aspects to consider are the real speedometer mileage and repair history and how often the car oil has been changed.

You will also need to check online with Kelly Blue Book and the other car two resources to determine a best price for the vehicle given its condition and amenities. The most imperative thing you will need to do when buying a used car is to have your mechanic look at it. Even if you are buying it from a car dealer, have a mechanic to look over the vehicle and assess the problems you may have with it in the near future. While car dealerships are supposed to have full disclosure, they do not always have a mechanic look at it before every possible sale. Therefore some unexpected things may happen like faulty hoses and such that were not a problem when they first got the car. Individuals do not have to give full disclosure at all and some prefer to keep certain details hidden. This is why having a mechanic look at it is important.

While there are many aspects you should know about buying a used car, including the extended warranty options and the other relevant factor would be to use your own judgment. You will be the only one to determine if the car is right for you. Occasionally when the price is right we tend to forget how much it may cost to fix major problems afterwards. Considering all the options is important before you purchase the car even if it means you are spending several weeks before finding the best car for yourself. Online search can be a great resource to find someone who is selling a car that you might like to buy, but without being able to physically inspect the new vehicle before purchase you are taking greater chances to spend significant amount of money for unforeseen repairs.

It seems that almost everyone is talking about fuel efficiency these days. Gas prices are higher than they ever have been before. Many people claim that the temperature of the earth is rising and that one of the main causes is emission from combustion engines. A result of this newfound consciousness of the gas guzzling nature of traditional automobiles is the advent of hybrid cars.

With all of the hype and talk about them, one question still remains: how do they work? How is it that a car can run on gasoline and electricity? Even more importantly, if they are supposed to save everyone so much money, why in the world are they so expensive?

“Hybrid,” when used in terms of an automobile, usually refers to a “hybrid electric vehicle,” which is a vehicle that runs on a traditional combustion engine and a rechargeable energy storage system. This combination allows the vehicle to achieve far better gas mileage than traditional vehicles, and it also allows the vehicle to avoid the necessity of recharging its battery, something that all-electric vehicles must do.

A number of different methods can be employed in order to recharge a hybrid electric vehicle’s (HEV’s) batteries without forcing it to charge from a direct electrical feed. Regenerative braking is the method most commonly used in modern, mass-produced HEVs. Regenerative braking is a process that converts kinetic energy acquired while the vehicle is actively reducing speed into electric energy. This electric energy is then either fed directly back into the system of stored for future use.

One of the primary drawbacks to HEVs is the reduction in engine power that results from greater fuel efficiency. Manufacturers are able to control the amount of fuel efficiency vs. power that will be present in any given hybrid. Plans are in place for owners to eventually be able to adjust this variable at their convenience. Indeed, some manufacturers have started using the added power from the electric engine to increase power and performance rather than fuel efficiency.

A hybrid has a gasoline engine much like that of traditional vehicles. The main difference is that the hybrid’s gasoline engine is much smaller. A hybrid also has a gasoline tank. It takes almost 1,000 pounds of batteries to equal the energy present in one gallon of gasoline, so it is no wonder that gasoline is still needed. A hybrid also has a transmission similar to that of standard gasoline vehicles.

Unlike a standard gasoline vehicle, a hybrid car also has an electric motor. The electric motor performs a variety of functions. It acts as both a motor and generator for the vehicle. It can take electric energy from the brakes and apply that to powering the car. Furthermore, it can slow the car down and return power to the batteries. An electric generator is also present with the function of producing electric energy. In terms of batteries, the hybrid’s electric motor can put energy into the batteries and remove energy from them right on the road, keeping a perfect balance of both processes.

While many people hope for a silver bullet for the current energy crisis, hybrid vehicles are a real middle step between traditional vehicles and those that will completely use alternative fuels. Continued research and technological advances will help lower the price of hybrids until they are as affordable as any other vehicle.

Cars are important part of our lives. We always need to get somewhere and while the public transportation in town may work just as well, there are some obvious advantages and flexibility that a personal transportation offers. And while we drive carefully, things happen and knowing how to choose a collision repair center or body shop for repairs even after a minor accident will be helpful. These are tips to help you find the best collision repair center or body shop in your local area.

Word of mouth: this is the best way to find a competent pair of hands to handle your car when it has been damaged in a collision. Most individual’s needing a body shop find that references helps them feel more secure about the work being done.

Yellow pages: while this is not always the ideal way to find a person you can be assured that they are indeed a business, whether they are the best or not they will provide you with the service you need. Collision repair centers and body shops advertise in yellow pages of any phone book to help bring customers to their place. Questions you should ask will follow this information in a bit.

Online: The Internet is the newest way to find information we need, especially information on collision repair centers or body shops. While there are many places online that offer body shops or repair centers it is hard to go through all the choices. Some ways to search online is using keywords, like the town you are in, and the type of repair center you need. If you are searching for a body shop to repair a paint job you will want to use those words in the search.

Now that you know three resources on where to find a collision repair center or body there are some questions you need to ask in order to find the correct shop. First what type of work do they do? Is it cosmetic or full repair? Where did the shop employees get their qualifications? How many years has the shop been in service? What kind of guarantee is offered on the work? What are other charges you may incur that are not specified in the estimate? All of these questions are important when you are considering the safety of your car as well as paying for a great job.

The questions on how to choose a collision repair center is not always easy, but once you have narrowed down the list of possible shops you will be well on your way to for a better service. Narrowing down your choices may simply be finding the body shop or repair center in your local area and then asking the aforementioned questions. It may also require a visit to the shop for a quote before having the work completed. Ultimately choosing a collision repair center will be strictly your decision, so a little research will absolutely improve a successful outcome!

For those who have never really been into cars and had help getting their first car you may not have heard of Kelly Blue Book. Kelly Blue Book is just one tool you can use when you are looking to buy a new car. Kelly Blue Book is a resource where you can go online or find a hard copy to determine the value of a car. Most of us in this day and age tend to head for the online resource because it gives us more options in figuring out the value of a car. Below are a few tips on how to use Kelly Blue Book to your advantage.

First whether you are buying or selling a car you should use Kelly Blue Book to determine the value of your car. You will need to know a few things about the car you are trying to find a value for. You will need to know what year it is, what the car has in the way of extras and manufacturer items, and the condition. You will also need to know the make and model. For example, the Kelly Blue Book online page will first ask you the below information:

Make / Model/ Miles

Amenities: anti lock brakes, air bags, type of seats, radio, CD player, etc.
Extras: after manufacturer add-ons, i.e. special items such as spoilers, non factory muffler, etc

Then it will ask you what you think the condition of the car is. You may elect excellent, good, or poor. There is a description by each of the choices so you can figure out where the car falls into place. For excellent you usually have to have no problems mechanically, with the interior and exterior. Most used cars fall under the good category because they have some cosmetic issues and a few little quirks. For cars that are older and you have several miles you may have to choose poor, but most of the time this is a rust bucket vehicle where you are trying to sell the car more for the parts it has rather than if it runs well.

The value is determined on the information you have supplied above. Cars tend to depreciate from what you bought them at. This means depending on the above information you may see a used value around half of what you paid for the car or less. Demand for the car will also help bring the price up. In other words if you have a vintage car in excellent condition you may get more for it than you paid depending on who you can find to buy it.

When you are heading into a car deal for a new car you will also need to check values on cars by using Kelly Blue Book. You will follow the same steps, but the result will be different. It will tell you what the retail price is, what the car would be listed for as a private sale, and the actually value of the car. The information is important because you can walk in to a car dealer and tell them you have done your research and know what the car should list at. For example if Kelly Blue Book finds the car, with the amenities you are searching for, at $13,000, but the car dealer wants $16,000 you have some negotiating room.

Kelly Blue Book and the other resources available are out there for you to use so that you are getting the best deal possible. The value of the car is important whether you are trading it in, selling it your self or buying a car from someone else. You want to make sure you are not getting a bad deal by doing some research first and knowing what to expect on any car you may be looking to purchase or sell.

Automotive credit cards exist for a variety of reasons, such as helping towards a new car, auto parts, or services. You may choose an automotive credit card for the reward program or because you like that manufacturer. In order to understand how these cards work so you can find the best card for your purposes you need to know a little more about. This introduction to automotive credit cards can help you make the decision.

The most important item to remember about the automotive rewards is that they can only help you towards the purchase of a car. While you may have 10,000 or more rewards points it will only help you towards the purchase. The rewards points are not actually a dollar amount. Most often you will receive a $1,000 to $3,000 discount on the car based on the amount of rewards points and the type of automotive credit card that you have. The companies also limit how you can use the rewards points. For instance they are only valid on certain models of cars, and generally do not include used vehicles. In order to find out what type of car is eligible for the discount you will want to speak with the credit card company’s rewards department. Another aspect of rewards points is that you have to buy a new or leased car.

When choosing the proper credit card you will also want to be cautious about the interest rate and fees. As with any credit card you always want to check out the interest rate and fees that may apply. First of all credit cards (unless they have a fixed rate) will change with the economy’s interest rates. This means you may start off with a great interest rate and find out later on they have raised it to 30%, which is the current maximum interest rate a credit card can have. Fees that may apply include annual fees, late fees, and redemption fees. If the card has an annual fee you will be required to pay that as long as you have the card. Most annual fees are between $45 and $90. Late fees are typically considered $30 charges when you are late in making a payment. Redemption fees may apply if you are trying to use the automotive credit card rewards towards certain things such as cars. In order to make the best use of a credit card, you need to be aware of the potential usage fees from using it and try to somewhat limit yourself in spending the money that you have available trough your credit line. By planning your spending activity, you will avoid incurring a debt you can’t handle.

Most automotive credit cards are great for those who know the type of car they wish to purchase. If you are simply looking for a credit card you will want to check out all other credit cards and not just those that can give you rewards towards a new car. If you are interested in a new car then choosing an appropriate automotive credit card will help you to financially realize your dream car into reality.

What are anti-lock brakes? Not many people know about them, but anti-lock brakes are something that almost everyone uses every time they step into a vehicle. Anti-lock brakes are an extremely helpful system of braking that makes stopping a great deal easier than it would be otherwise.

The main problem with brakes that are not anti-lock is that they have a tendency to lock up when a rapid stop is required. A wheel that is skidding does not have as much traction as one that is not skidding. Hence, anti-lock brakes keep brakes from locking up and reducing the amount of traction the wheels have.

The difference between stopping with anti-lock brakes and without anti-lock brakes is tremendous. An average driver using anti-lock brakes will be able to stop faster and with more control than a professional driver who is not using anti-lock brakes. That is a major difference.

Every anti-lock brake system has four main components: speed sensors, a pump, valves, and a controller. Speed sensors are located at each wheel. These sensors let the car’s built-in computer know when a wheel is about to lock up. The valves serve the important role of regulating the force at which each individual brake can be applied.

The valves have three standard positions in which they regulate the brake pressure. When a valve is in open position, pressure from the master cylinder is allowed to pass through to the brake. This allows the brake pressure to increase. When a valve is blocking the brake line, it does not allow more pressure to be applied even if the driver pushes the brake harder. A valve can also be somewhere between the open and closed positions in order to release some pressure from a brake.

The pump works with the valves to help regulate brake pressure. When a valve releases pressure from a brake, the pump is ready to raise the pressure back if it is needed. All of these parts work together with the controller, which is the car’s computer. When things function properly, the car’s computer is able to adjust the amount of brake pressure on each brake. The end result is a rapid deceleration that does not cause the wheels to lock up.

Brakes lock up because a wheel can stop much faster than a vehicle can. It can take five seconds or more for a car moving at 60 mph to come to a complete stop. A wheel, on the other hand, can come to a complete stop within one second. A car’s computer observes the speed at which wheels are accelerating and decelerating. When the computer sees that a wheel is decelerating much faster than is possible, the computer causes the valve that is on that wheel’s brake line to close. This prevents the driver’s mashing the brake pedal down from locking up all of the wheels.

Anti-lock brakes are beautifully engineered devices that are used in almost all vehicles now. When functioning properly, they allow rapid decelerations without wheels locking up. This makes driving safer for everyone.

There are many places you can go to get your oil changed. Most of the places are not too expensive, but they are often busy, and it is hard to get to the shop when you are busy working. If you are interested in changing your car’s oil yourself there are things you should know. First of all most cars are pretty much the same in this regard. If you have changed one car’s oil you can probably change it in most cars. While the oil pan may be located in a different area of each individual model it is generally on the bottom of the vehicle. Below are a few tips that will help you make this task easier.

You will need at least six quarts of oil. Preferably you should use the same type of oil as you had in the engine before.

You will also need to purchase a new oil filter designed specifically for the model of your car.

During an oil change most people also change the air filters on their cars. The air filter tends to become dirty in about the same time as the oil needs changing, especially on older model vehicles. Therefore it may not be a bad idea to purchase an air filter as well.

If you have not done any prior work on the vehicle at home, you will need to purchase a car jack or tire racks. These racks allow you to drive up on them to elevate the front end of the car where you will be working. If you are using a jack or the racks you will need to place blocks behind the other two tires to keep the car from rolling because the parking brakes do not always hold the grip reliably. Make sure that the parking brakes are on and that the transmission is in park position. You need to elevate the car so that the oil will run out of the oil pan completely as well as make it easier for you to reach the oil pan.

Prepare a canister or a pan to catch the oil in. Most auto parts shops including those online will have oil pans that you can drain the oil into. These pans have a special design to make disposing of the oil into an oil drum easy.

You will also need an oil filter wrench. This wrench must be the correct wrench for the size of filter you have. There are many sizes depending on the type of car you have. Another tool you will need is the wrench for the oil pan nut. This nut has to be removed to let the oil escape. This is usually a metric or standard wrench depending on who manufactured your car. The best tool for this job is a socket wrench.

Once you have all of the tools and other items you will need to locate the oil pan. It is best to look in your car’s manual for this information. Keep plenty of towels on hand as well.

First, loosen the nut on the oil pan, making sure that you are prepared for the first gush of oil by having the waste pan underneath the oil pan.

Next, locate the oil fill cap and remove it. Some manuals may tell you to do this first. I have found that this creates more of a gush if you wait to remove the hexagonal nut after, so the potential for a spill is higher.

Once you have gotten the oil flowing out of the vehicle you can then set a bucket just under the oil filter. There will be a little oil drainage from the filter so having the bucket under there will help keep you from causing a spill. Once you have removed the old filter you can then screw on the new filter following the instructions on the box.

Now that you have removed all of the oil from your vehicle you will need to make sure that you replace the hexagonal nut on the oil pan and make sure that the oil filter is screwed on tight. Then, you can begin replacing the oil. It is best to fill the engine with at least four quarts of oil and then let it settle. Check the engine oil level and then add a quart until it is full. Check with your manual on the exact amount of oil required for the engine.

Summer is a great time to get the family out and enjoying the country we live in. We all enjoy the freedom of the open road. If you are ready to prepare for the summer vacation with your family then you may find the tips below very useful.

First of all you had probably winterized the vehicle when you were putting it away for the summer season. So you will need to get the RV cleaned up and ready to receive all of the supplies you took out of it for the winter. Often, depending on the storage you have used, you will need some type of pest control, such as a bug bomb.

You will want to make sure it is mechanically ready to hit the road. This means you will preferably need a professional mechanic to check on internal engine components of the RV. Pay close attention for damage from winter weather or side effects of the vehicle simply not being used.

Check for deterioration of the seals. Check all of the seals from the engine seals to door seals. There is nothing less fun than finding a draft from a window or door seal having deteriorated during the winter season. You can protect against this by resealing the old seals and keeping them oiled during the off-season.

Check the awnings. When you are on the road, you want to stop at night and settle into a campsite rather than deal with the awning that may be damaged, mildewed or even be full of insects.

The hitch is also important depending on the type of RV you have. If you have a trailer that hooks on to a hitch behind your truck then you will need to verify it is not damaged. Also make sure that the bolts are still in place and not loose.

Some key things to look at when you are inspecting the engine include the battery, cooling system, fuel system, fluids, fan belts, and other hoses. You also want to check the tire pressure and correct the inflation to the proper amount. Also when checking the tires, make sure they are not to worn in any one place as well as looking for any leaks or punctures.

Changing oil filters, fuel filters, air filters, and spark plugs are also important in getting your RV ready for the summer season.

Once you have checked the mechanics of the vehicle and dealt with any problems you have found you will be ready to load the RV up with supplies. Some supplies you may want to include are extra oil, filters, spark plugs, belts, and of course at least one extra tire. These supplies can help you keep your RV running smoothly during the trip in the event something does occur.

Insurance is also important before you hit the road. Check your policy’s expiration date and update it for travel period if need. Most individuals tend to change the insurance during winter to lower the rates while it sits in storage and then increase it during the trip for full coverage. Following these simple tips can make your RV vacation that much more enjoyable.
